We are going to give a feedback on the story Mesoke and her new friends, the link of the story is here.

We first thought about language. We have to say, it was a good choice to use different voices for the different parts of the story, but it was a bit hard to differentiate them, and it was hard to understand the girls at some moments because they didn't always articulate. There is one vocabulary point: they talked about the swallow by saying “she”, but they should have used “it” because it is an animal.

Secondly, the technique. We really liked the fact that the drawings were simple but easy to understand apart from the background: as the trees didn't really change, we had trouble finding out Mesoke was actually moving forward into the forest. Besides, we don't really see the smile of the girl which makes her look a bit scary sometimes but it is more a detail.

And finally, the pedagogy. It was well presented and easy to understand. The only thing we could say about it is that the actions were sometimes not really logic, but otherwise it was very well done.

The activities were really well chosen! They were clear, simple and went well with the story. The only comment we could make was about the presentation of the second one: the aim was to match pictures and sentences but they were both listed horizontally.

As a conclusion, we can say that what we liked most about the story were the drawings thanks to they're originality (the teepees were very well done!) and the activities were appropriate. Thanks to this story we learnt that a swallow was an hirondelle. The only blame we can make is about the logic of the story: the background that doesn't really change and the reason why some animals couldn't help Mesoke (why did the mouse need to swim?)

Another wordle

Hello everybody !Here's a Wordle of our story :) And the First three winners are ZOOM, Look and trunk :)

And now it is my turn to speak!
A lot has already been said but I'll repeat it anyway :p
For me too, one of the most difficult parts was to lower the level of the story, we had to drop many great ideas because we couldn't explain them in a simple way. I always loved writing stories and having brought this one to a good end really makes me proud of our group.
Talking about our group, I am really glad I was with Jeanette and Cécile, not because I don't like the others, but because we were a really good team and everybody invested as much as the others, instead of one doing all the work and the two others watching quietly, all along the project I was very confident we would be able to manage. Thank you girls!
I didn't learn any vocabulary, excepted the word carp, but I learnt how to talk to children and that will certainly be useful in the future! I also learnt how to use the really useful software which name I can't remember right know... the one on which we put our final stories.
I agree with Cécile when she says that it will help us when we will be teachers, I had doubts because I didn't know wether I would be able to create something that would be simple enough and thanks to this project I know it is possible!
So this is my feedback! Maybe I'll think of something else in a while, but that's what the blog is for! :)

Afterthoughts

Hello :)

Well it feels weird to have that project done ! It was quite intensive near the deadline....

As Janette said, I don't feel like I improved a lot in English. It helped me realize that when I am conscious that I have to speak English I get tensed and forget my vocabulary more, whereas when with friends, outside, doing something, words come easier ! So, in class, when I'll (hopefully) be a teacher and that I'll have to be cautious to speak good English grammar/vocab/conjugation... Well :) teaching is not something you do because you like it and have certain facilities for, but also a responsibility ! Giving the class quality, materials they can understand and challenging enough to keep them interested !

Creating that story helped me realize that a teacher, no matter how much he/she knows, no matter how many years he/she's been abroad, he'll have to be at the students'l level to help them growing in understanding !
It is hard to know what others don't know ;)
And what we did was only for 9-10 y.old kids ! What is it to teach to beginners or advanced !

I really liked that experience ! Not only I learned that I could use Gimp for drawing :) (first time using it...) but now when I see a children book, I have a little glimpse of how much work was needed to achieve in making a book of good quality !

As a teamwork, it was good to be in that "hardship" together ^^
Yes it was hard ! But it was fun, it taught us a lot and it was the less boring work of the week !

Janette summed up well my thoughts too :) I'll just add that I can't wait to have the feedback from the teacher !

Personal thoughts

Language, Pedagogy and Technology

Perhaps my language skill didn't increase for this option but it did in general thanks to Word Reference. This dictionary is very useful because of it content: words are translated, defined, given in examples, you have great amounts of expressions in which the word can be used and the pronunciation !
One of the best online dictionaries :)

This semester was "creative pedagogy" if I may say that. Because the only thing we had to do was creating a story for children by the means of technology. Using technology for our generation is easy since we understand how it works but the difficulty comes from each individual. After this year (yep ! school is practically over) i realized that  being a teacher is not easy.
If I had to do this project on my own I would probably fail due to my lack of time (and the drawing too )! Time commitment is essential because we have personal things to do and other subjects and this project needed extra time. So I guess this is something teachers face on a daily bases : dedication of personal time to create lesson plans, activities etc ...

The most difficult thing in the project was being able to find the appropriate (simple) vocabulary and short sentences that the students would understand. Students have different levels and understanding abilities and you have to  find a way to reach each student and that was challenging. Do they know this word? Isn't it to difficult ? ... were questions we always had to have in mind.

What else can I say ? ... hmm
My voice .. I will never be an actress! My voice was really awful on these recordings and speaking loud and clear have always been my major problem this is why I will never be a teacher.
Teaching is firstly a gift and everyone isn't gifted :)

What makes an effective team ?

How did we organize ?

We only met four times out of class (hope I have that right). Once at the library, twice at Cecile's and once at Johanna's.
When we finally finished our story lines and we had our goals things were much easier. Everyone understood the tasks they had to do, so we did some of the work separately and met  only to combine things together and change what needed to be changed.
We had a great time laughing, eating and working together :)

Who did what ?

I'll start by saying that we are a great team!
We all participated in finding the story and at a point we even changed most of it so that it would be easier to be drawn. Thou all of us tried drawing (which was a huge failure for me !), we all did the "Fiche pédagogique"  and we all spoke for a character, we knew how to use each other qualities and combined them to do something good.
What I mean by that is :
Cecile is talented, she can draw: so she was our artist !
Johanna has a clear loud voice: so she was the voice for our main character (Kitty) and she came up with the best activities so she was responsible for them.
And me, I have skills for image manipulation: so I manipulated the images.
We complete each other :)

I did this with Photofitre :

Cecile drew this then transferred it to Gimp and colored it :

And together we did that !!

As a team we knew how to listen to each other (critics or positive aspects) and the only thing I would change if I could is : start working much earlier !!!!!! I never thought drawing could take so much time and patience but we managed to finish on time :)

Collaboration was a success !

These past weeks ....

My last post ended with GIMP and Sketchbook so I'll start back  from there ....

Monday March 11th ....

I had finally installed GIMP. It's an image manipulation such as Photoshop and we had a lady visiting us in class (can't remember her name)  to explain how it  works. I didn't really pay attention to all her presentation because she was speaking quite fast and because i'm used to Photofitre which is practically the same thing.
But i'm sure it helped other people, and that's great :)
Class was cool that day. After she left we only had to continue working on our stories (if my mind isn't mistaking me). And at the end of the class the teacher announced that stories should be finish by next week for a presentation in class (feedback) and also the activities along with the "Fiche pédagogique" .  At this point I realized that time was really passing fast; I wasn't aware that the deadline was so near.

PS: Sketcbook isn't free !!! so we'll do without it

Monday March 18th ....

We arrived late for class because we recorded our voice on Voicethread at the last minute but at least our work was done !!! And I'm pretty proud of it :). That day we saw all the other stories and got feedback from the students and the teacher so that we can ameliorate the final version.

Monday March 25th ....

On that day the teacher made sure she had everyone movie and activities then we had to create a "questionnaire" for the teachers receiving our projects.

Another thoughtful (bored) Kitty

Well... I didn't know it would take so long... As I am not used to gimp, it takes me a while to try out different things, different brushes, shadows etc. I am realizing that as we had to simplify the story, I also can't do a perfect work and I need to simplify the picture (that'll appear a few seconds on the screen... siiiighs such a waste^^)

You can see with the hair how I got lazy and didn't do all the shade/light...

But I am happy with the result :) it is fun, even though it takes a long time to do it...

Good evening friends !

KITTY !!! Finally !

Hello eveybody !!! Finally, I had lots of problems with Gimp, partially because I saw a tutorial on the internet but it didn't work as well with my gimp :) It is not perfect, but it feels good to see some progress in the work !!! I am wondering if the choice of color is wise... especially with the belt...

tutorialThis should be the second slide,  or the first drawing ! well... still got 10ish to go... I know, I'm late... I know...

Just realized I forgot the blush ! shoot...

Well have a nice week end, and good luck for those who aren't done with their slideshows yet :)

ps: if you're interested in knowing how to do that kind of drawing on gimp, here's a tutorial that could help you!

Our final story

And here is our story! It took us several weeks to come up with ideas that we all agreed on and our story has changed quite a bit as you'll see :)

      1) Kitty, a little girl lives in England (map England)
2) She goes to visit her grandfather. (unhappy face, red haired, little dress)
3) “It is raining, I am bored” (looks outside the window, it is raining, looks bored)
4) “Go, take a look upstairs!” (grandpa points at the ceiling with a big smile, we see the stairs)
5) Upstairs, Kitty finds a big trunk and in the trunk… (still the stairs, a trunk, Kitty kneeling in front of it)
6) (Title: Animals around the world)
7) (She opens the book)
8) In Asia there are… (zoom)
9) Pandas!
10) (pouf! Photo)
11) Wow, look a black and white panda
12) In Australia there are… (zoom)
 13) Kangaroos! (photo)
14) Look a brown kangaroo and its baby
15) In South America there are… (zoom)
 16) Parrots! (photo)
17) Look a parrot - it is red, yellow and blue!
18) At the South Pole there are… (zoom)
 19) Seals! (photo)
20) Look a grey seal!
21) In Africa there are… (zoom)
 22) Lions! (photo)
23) Look an orange lion (Roar!)
24) “What are you doing, honey?” (mum opens  trunk)  “Is the lion there?”

As you can see we dropped a lot, we hope our story is still interesting enough! The next step will be finish the drawings and put everything on VoiceThread... Piece of cake!
We thought about hiding butterflies in several slides and make the children look for them at the end. We didn't add them finally but the idea remains an option.

Just a few words !

Hi guys!  Janette is back :)
We are in a world of new technologies but technology has been giving a lot of trouble these days!! It’s not easy being a student with no home internet access (Yeah it sucks -_-'') and my laptop has some serious issues too!! (And I'm broke can't buy a next one now ... LoL)
But anyways I'm here now and by the way, Cecile has been doing a create job so far keeping the blog lively.
Humm what can I say?
Oh yeah! I had some technical difficulties with Audacity and Free screen to video before the holiday break. Unfortunately I couldn't convert Free screen to video so that the teacher could have it but then ... Now I know (and hope that everyone else know too) we have to save the file in FLV format!
Our story line started good but, we still haven't finish writing the story yet and time is really against us ! I was kind of disappointed when the teacher said that we couldn't use pictures from the internet because I felt like I wasted my time looking for pictures and we can't even use them anymore. Now we have to speed up our work because drawing all the different landscapes for our story is going to be a bit difficult. But I know we'll make it :)
Cecile showed us some drawing she did for our main character and I found them pretty cool and she’s quite talented! I can hardly draw a flower LoL.
This week I didn't do anything much in class (because I didn't have my laptop) but the rest of the class created an account on Voicethread and got familiar with it (though I already had an account and got used to it so, I didn't miss much).  But they also installed WORDLE!
What is WORDLE (wordle.net)?
Wordle is an application to create "word clouds" / "tag clouds". It's a graphic representation of words taken from a text or words you type in.  It’s amazing to see that it automatically put important words in bigger characters (when the word is written/ repeated several times)!  This is awesome because you can copy and paste a text and get the main topic before reading it; Wordle is good at summarizing. :)
Wordle can help to create guidelines for an assignment or a debate, I guess. Or, introduce an activity: maybe put different words on a same topic and having the students to discovery the topic based on the link they find between the words.

Oh! We have to install GIMP and Brintha told us about Sketchbook application but I haven’t check none of them yet so stay tuned, I’ll soon be back with a next article ;)

Week 5 : slide show !

Hello everybody !

So, the week before vacation we started working on the slide show for the story ! We went through the story in a more precise way, deciding what vocabulary and what event would be linked together !
It was so hard !
I mean, not that it is complicated to invent a story, the difficult part is to make a story that the children would understand !
sum up:
-We have to create a story (which means that it has to have an interesting guideline)
-for children with limited vocabulary (which narrows greatly the possibilities of story"events")
-at least 12 slideshows...

I guess the problem is just that I went wild imagining a complicated story. What we simplified at the beginning wasn't enough. We need to simplify more and more our story, which gives us the responsibility of being conceited (sidenote for the teacher :) I was thinking of the french word "concis" but this one came up - #wrong# - and it's not the first time happening...)
hum, the responsibility of being more precise/concise/brief (thanks Googletrad). It obliges us to pay more attention to what we write, and in case you haven't noticed, I love to take time to explain, tell, chat, blabber... (yes, I also love synonyms)

So, all that to say that what we imagined during the first storydraft needs to be changed...

The teacher also gave us a little explanatory of the children's level we're dealing with. So we decided to focus on colors, weathers (sunny, rainy, cloudy...), feelings (I'm bored, tired...), human body (head to toes), movements (jumping, stomping...).

Now that I read again what we wrote I kinda have more hope for our story :) it'll be just great for the children ! It is very interesting to create with a goal. Your creation needs to match the other's ability, it's a "framed art" ^^

What else did I learn ? Oh yeah, "carpe" in French is "carp" in English... Hard-hey ? (as Canadian would say)

Well, good night !

Week 4, moving on... :)

Week 3 : Haha... Was late and Janette did a great post !

Week 4 : Starting the story !!! I won't reveal much of the story :) Our main character is Kitty and the story will be about her amazing travel !!!

So, everybody... Our teacher scolded us because we don't put up enough info about our progress, what we go through etc... so now we'll have more time in class to dedicate to our lovely blog :)

Vocab gram etc :  I learned trunk :)
I also realize that I am loosing a lot of vocabulary as I am most of the time lazy about my English .. I get in touch with a lot of English speaking people that know french so if I throw french words here and there it is funny and they understand me... need to work on that laziness ;)

Pedagogy :
I love the principle of creating suspense, the desire for the child  to learn or to understand, so that they would receive the lesson in an easier way ! Today we did the story line, how to create a desire for the kid : quest with character growth that the kids could identify with : scared of leaving the parents...

Technology :
Nothing to say:) exept that I can't wait to start drawing the character and finding out how to protray Kitty:) I am even thinking of downloading softwears like photoshop or something like it...

Collaboration : gathering info about...
Janette : Africa + Australia
Johanna : South America + South Pole
Cécile : Asia + drawings

Week 3 ! Brainstorm

Humm. What can I say about last week ...
Well we started class by installing several software on our laptops : Audacity and Free screen to video (for those who didn't do it at home) but also "FreeMind". "FreeMind"  allows us to organize our ideas. All you have to do is to add nodes and write down what's on your mind. In order to get used to it we did a brainstorm on the characteristics of a good story and a main character after watching pictures of different characters (cartoons/human portraits) . But also on the benefits of reading story to children (after browsing through a document on Edmodo).

The main characteristics we noted down are:

For the story
- Basic and specific vocabulary, short and simple sentences
- simple storyline
- lively, illustrated
- moral (?)

For the character (s)
- an imaginary character
- pay attention to physical attributes (slim/tall/round etc) and inner attributes (good/bad)
Facial expression is important as much as appearance (colors, clothes, posture etc...)

Benefits of reading story to children
- it's an easy way to learn
- it allows the children to develop imagination and creativity but also to predict and anticipate an event
- it develops their listen comprehension and permit them to share their opinions and expressions
- while developing their language abilities, they increase their curiosity while discovering other cultures and civilization

We did most of this work while recording our voices to help  Mrs K. Thapliyal  in her research (though I doubt I was useful because I really have difficulties in speaking loud!! Not my fault ...)

What else ... ?
Concerning collaboration, we've decided that each week we would start working from Thursday (because the first days of the week we are very busy).  And concerning language improvement I learnt a new word: a stubble :) Thanks to our new classmate from London (Sorry, I can't remember her name!)

Week 2 : A bit late :)

Week 2 : late report...

Every Monday, us students have "didactic class" and we need to post a kind of weekly report on what we've learned... Janette was on time :)

Anyways, the topics we need to report on are Language improvement, Pedagogy, Use of technology and Collaboration
As Janette already answered all of them, I don't need to add anything I pretty much agree with all that she said :) I am not diligent enough with communicating, but I hope that this will get better !
We are trying to work out things as we slowly but surely get to know THE Project ! We're supposed to start this afternoon !!!!

I have a few words to say about the videos we watched last week though.

We saw different types of videos that the students from last years had done. Some of the materials used for the videos were pictures, video, music, sounds, drawings, a voice reading what was written on the screen, text etc.
It was a first glimpse of what tools we could use for our own project, and it was interesting to see the work one by others on the internet ! I am sure of one thing : I really, really don't want to do a video without any voice reading the text.
We watched a video entitled "the singing contest", I am both a visual an auditory learner so I understand the importance of considering the different learning characteristics of the audience. When one is missing it becomes harder to stay focus on the story.
Therefore, for our project I hope to keep this point clear in mind : use video, pictures (in fact as much visual as needed...) then put an adequate music background or voice reading to it !
Oh, I almost forgot something, the story needs to have a clear goal or an interesting frame. We were kind of disappointed of the video. There seemed like there weren't any goal to it...

Have a great day, and see you soon for some new adventures ;)

WEEK 2: REFLEXIONS

A - Language improvement: vocabulary learnt, some part of grammar better understood, which type(s) of language difficulties are you facing, how a team-mate has helped in making you understand something?
So far I've only learned technical vocabulary due to the videos (History of technology interactivity and Digital story telling). In fact we haven't started working as a "team" because we don't even get in contact with each other after the class !

B - Pedagogy: Which type of decision-taking is important? Why do you take the decisions you do while making stories? Which aspect of teaching did you learn today?
To be honest, I don't know which type of decision-taking is important. When I have to take decisions, I choose them according to my goals; choosing the best alternative.

C - Use of technology: how do you think the technology you are learning to use is helping you to make stories? Which types of technological difficulties are you facing? Are your friends helping? In what  way?
A story is a series of pictures (animated and voiced or not) used to give a message and the technology I am learning to use (VoiceThread) is helping me to assemble all this elements (sounds, comments, pictures etc.)  rapidly and efficiently.
I’m not facing any technological difficulties or being helped by my friends simply because we haven’t started working.

D - Collaboration: how are you dividing your tasks each week? Who does what? Who helpswhom? Are you facing difficulties collaborating with each other? How are you sorting themout? How much work are you managing to do in class and how much do you do at home?
We have communication difficulties because my emails never get a reply or my texting.  We are supposed to communicate via Edmodo and it still doesn't happen but I think that we'll soon solve this problem ...
I haven’t done any work at home yet besides trying to understand VoiceThread.

I'm not sure if this is what we had to do but ... at least I tried ;)

First post !

Hello Everybody !

Here's the first post for the "LLCE didactic" class !

We made this blog to share our progress, questions, thoughts on our project : "creating a story" for students !
This is just the beginning, and we hope to soon put more information about it !
First step : creating the blog : Check !

See you soon !
